How to set reminders in Notion (3 ways)

Three ways to set reminders in Notion: inline, database, and automations. Step-by-step for desktop and mobile, plus tips for recurring reminders.

Setting a reminder in Notion using the @remind command

Notion reminders notify you about upcoming deadlines, tasks, and events at a specific date and time. You can create them three ways: by typing @remind directly in a page, by toggling the reminder option inside a database Date property, or by setting up a database automation that sends alerts based on conditions you define. Below is a step-by-step guide for each method on desktop and mobile.

How to create an inline reminder

Inline reminders are the fastest way to set a one-off alert anywhere inside a Notion page.

  1. Open the page where you want the reminder.
  2. Type @remind followed by a date, a time, or both.
    • @remind tomorrow
    • @remind Friday at 5 pm
    • @remind June 15 9am
  3. Notion creates a blue tag. Click it to edit the exact date, time, timezone, or advance notice (for example, 30 minutes before).

The tag turns red once the date arrives or passes, so overdue items stand out at a glance.

On mobile: tap the @ icon in the toolbar above the keyboard, select a date, then tap the resulting tag to adjust the time and advance notice.

How to set a reminder in a Notion database

Database reminders attach to a Date property, which means every item in a table, board, or calendar view can carry its own alert.

  1. Open the database and click into the item you want to be reminded about.
  2. Click the Date property field.
  3. In the calendar pop-up, choose your date.
  4. Toggle Remind and pick when you want the notification: on the day of the event, one day before, two days before, or at a custom time.
  5. Toggle Include time if you need a specific hour.

This method works well for project trackers, content calendars, and any database where multiple items share a deadline workflow.

How to automate reminders with database automations

Notion's database automations let you send reminder notifications automatically when a condition is met, without manually toggling the Remind option on each item.

  1. Open your database and click the lightning bolt icon (Automations) at the top right.
  2. Click New automation.
  3. Set the trigger to a date-based condition, for example: "When Date property is 1 day before."
  4. Set the action to "Send notification to" and choose the recipient (creator, assignee, or a specific person).
  5. Click Create.

Every time a database item's date matches the trigger condition, Notion sends a notification automatically. This is the closest alternative to recurring reminders for repeating workflows like weekly reviews or monthly reports.

Which reminder method should you use?

For most people, inline reminders cover everyday needs. Switch to database reminders when you manage deadlines in a table or board. Use automations when you want hands-free alerts across an entire database.

How do Notion reminder notifications work?

When a reminder fires, Notion alerts you through several channels:

  • Desktop app: push notification immediately.
  • Mobile app: push notification within five minutes of the reminder time.
  • Inbox: a red badge appears next to Inbox in the left sidebar showing unread notifications.
  • Email: if Notion is not open on any device, you receive an email notification.

How to customize notification settings

Go to Settings & members and click My notifications. From there you can:

  • Turn email notifications on or off.
  • Enable or disable mobile push notifications.
  • Mute notifications for specific pages.

On mobile, tap the three-dot menu near the top of your home page, then go to Settings and select My notifications.

How to assign a reminder to a team member

To notify a teammate, combine an @mention with an @remind on the same line:

@remind Wednesday 2pm @Jack Smith review the quarterly report

The mentioned person receives the reminder in their Inbox at the specified time. They can reply directly from the notification.

This only works with inline reminders. For database reminders, use automations to route notifications to specific people.

What are the limitations of Notion reminders?

Notion reminders cover the basics, but they have a few gaps worth knowing about:

  • No native recurring reminders. You cannot set a reminder to repeat weekly or monthly. Workarounds include duplicating items via templates or using database automations with date formulas. For recurring tasks specifically, consider syncing Notion with Todoist, which handles recurring due dates natively.
  • Limited advance notice presets. Database reminders only offer a few options (day of, 1 day before, 2 days before). Inline reminders are more flexible.
  • No calendar app integration. Notion reminders only fire inside Notion's own notification system. They do not appear in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or Outlook.
  • Each reminder is set individually. There is no way to apply a default reminder to all new database items without an automation.

When to use Notion reminders

  • Deadline tracking: set a database reminder on every task so nothing slips through.
  • Meeting prep: create an inline reminder one hour before a meeting to review notes.
  • Team handoffs: mention a colleague and set a reminder for when you need their input.
  • Content calendars: automate reminders two days before each publish date so drafts get reviewed on time.
  • Follow-ups: after sending a proposal or email, add a reminder to check back in three days.

Beyond Notion reminders: syncing with a calendar app

Notion's built-in reminders work well inside Notion, but they do not reach your phone's calendar or sync with tools like Google Calendar or Outlook. If you need every Notion deadline to also show up as a calendar event with its own notification, syncing Notion with Google Calendar bridges that gap. Each database item with a date becomes a calendar event automatically, complete with the calendar app's own alert system.

Turn Notion deadlines into calendar events

Sync your Notion databases with Google Calendar, Outlook, or Todoist. Every date becomes an event with its own reminder, automatically.

FAQ

Can Notion send you reminders?

Yes. Type `@remind` followed by a date and time anywhere in a page, or toggle the Remind option inside a database Date property. Notion sends a push notification on desktop and mobile, plus an email if the app is closed.

Does Notion support recurring reminders?

Not natively. Notion has no built-in option to repeat a reminder on a schedule. The closest workaround is setting up a database automation that triggers notifications based on date conditions, or syncing with a task app like Todoist that supports recurring due dates.

Why are my Notion reminders late or missing?

Delayed or missing alerts are usually caused by disabled push notifications in your OS settings, battery-saver mode on mobile, or having Notion open on another device (which suppresses duplicate notifications). Check Settings > My notifications inside Notion and verify that your device allows Notion to send notifications.

Can Notion link to Apple Reminders?

Not directly. Notion does not have a native integration with Apple Reminders. You can use third-party tools like IFTTT to connect them, or sync Notion with Google Calendar using 2sync so that Notion deadlines appear as calendar events with native alerts.

How do I change the timezone for a reminder?

Click the inline reminder tag or the database Date property, then look for the timezone option in the calendar pop-up. To change your workspace default timezone, go to Settings > Account > Preferences and update the timezone there.

Can I set a reminder for someone else in Notion?

Yes, but only with inline reminders. Type `@remind` with a date and `@name` on the same line. The mentioned person receives the notification in their Inbox at the specified time. For database items, use automations to route notifications to specific people.
