How to set reminders in Notion (3 ways, plus recurring)

A Notion reminder notifies you at a date and time you choose: a deadline, a call you cannot miss. There are three ways to create one.

Type @remind inside any page, set the reminder inside a database item's Date property, or build a database automation that fires notifications on a schedule. The first two work on every plan, including Free. The third needs a paid plan.

Each method is below, along with how to make a reminder repeat and what to check when one never fires.

How to create an inline reminder

Inline reminders are the fastest way to set a one-off alert anywhere inside a Notion page.

1. Open the page where you want the reminder.
2. Type @remind followed by a date, a time, or both.
   • @remind tomorrow
   • @remind 7pm
   • @remind Wednesday at 1pm
3. Notion creates a blue tag. Click it to edit the exact date, time, timezone, or advance notice (for example, 30 minutes before).

The tag turns red once the date arrives or passes, so overdue items stand out at a glance.

On mobile: tap the @ icon in the toolbar above the keyboard, select a date, then tap the resulting tag to adjust the time and advance notice.

How to set a reminder in a Notion database

Database reminders attach to a Date property, which means every item in a table, board, or calendar view can carry its own alert.

1. Open the database and click into the item you want to be reminded about.
2. Click the Date property field.
3. In the calendar pop-up, choose your date.
4. Toggle Remind and pick when you want the notification: on the day of the event, one day before, two days before, or at a custom time.
5. Toggle Include time if you need a specific hour.

Step 5 does more than add an hour to the row. Notion's help center describes the calendar window as the place to set "when you want to be reminded (i.e. 30 minutes beforehand)", and that minute-level offset only makes sense once the date carries a time. Without one, you pick from day-level presets.

How to automate recurring reminders with database automations

A database automation sends the notifications for you, so nobody has to toggle Remind on each new item.

1. Open your database and click ⚡ at the top.
2. Click New automation.
3. Pick a trigger. Notion offers three: Page added, Property edited, and Every {frequency}.
4. Add the action Send notification to and choose who receives it. It accepts up to 20 people in your workspace, or whoever sits in a People property on the item.
5. Click Create.

Notion has no "one day before this date" trigger. Date-driven alerts come from the recurring trigger instead.

How to set a recurring reminder

A Notion reminder cannot repeat on its own. Notion's help center answers the recurring question directly: "Not at the moment, but recurring tasks and recurring reminders are on the roadmap!"

The Every {frequency} trigger covers the same ground from the database side. Notion documents what you can configure: "You can set your automation to repeat every day, week, month, and so on. You can also set a time that the automation will be triggered, the date that the automation trigger will begin and end, and the timezone."

Pair that trigger with Send notification to and you get a Monday morning review ping nobody has to remember to create. Which reminder method should you use?

Inline reminders cover everyday needs. Switch to database reminders when deadlines are tracked in a table or board, and to automations when the same alert should fire again and again.

How do Notion reminder notifications work?

When a reminder fires, Notion alerts you through several channels:

• Inbox: a red badge appears next to Inbox at the top of the left sidebar.
• Desktop app: a push notification in the Notion desktop app.
• Mobile app: a push notification within five minutes of the reminder time.
• Email: if Notion is not open at the time of the reminder, you get both a mobile push and an email.

How to customize notification settings

On desktop, go to Settings and open Notifications. On mobile, tap the ••• icon in the top corner to open the sidebar, then go to Settings and select My notifications.

Four groups of settings sit there:

• Mobile push notifications.
• Desktop push notifications and badge icons.
• Slack notifications.
• Email notifications.

How to assign a reminder to a team member

To notify a teammate, put an @mention and an @remind in the same block:

@Jack Smith @remind Wednesday 2pm to review the quarterly report

The mentioned person receives the reminder in their Inbox at the specified time. They can reply directly from the notification.

This only works with inline reminders. For database items, use an automation to route notifications to specific people.

Why your Notion reminders are not working

A reminder that never arrives usually has one of these causes.

• Notion was already open. If the app is open on your phone or computer when the reminder fires, you get the Inbox badge instead of a push or an email. Notion sends those two only when the app is closed.
• The operating system is blocking Notion. Check your device's notification permissions for Notion first.
• Battery saver is on. Aggressive power saving on Android and iOS delays background pushes, so a reminder lands late rather than never.
• The reminder has no time. A date-only reminder fires on the day-level preset you picked, not at the hour you had in mind. Toggle Include time and set the offset yourself.
• The timezone is wrong. Reminders follow the timezone attached to the date. Change the workspace default in Settings, then Preferences, then Language & Time.
• You are on the Free plan and built an automation. Free accounts can only create Slack notification automations, so the one you saved is not running.

What are the limitations of Notion reminders?

Notion reminders cover the basics, but there are gaps worth knowing about.

• A single reminder cannot repeat. The Every {frequency} automation above is the closest thing Notion offers, and it needs a paid plan. For recurring due dates that repeat natively, syncing Notion with Todoist is the simpler route.
• Advance notice is coarse without a time. Date-only reminders are limited to day-level presets. Inline reminders and timed dates are far more flexible.
• Reminders stay inside Notion. You can add a database to Notion Calendar, but Notion states the ceiling plainly: "At the moment, you can only view your Notion database in Notion Calendar, not in Google or iCloud calendar." • Each reminder is set individually. There is no default reminder for new database items without an automation.

When to use Notion reminders

• Deadline tracking: a database reminder on every task, ideally on top of a Notion to-do list template.
• Meeting prep: an inline reminder one hour before, to review notes.
• Team handoffs: a mention plus a reminder for when you need a colleague's input.
• Content calendars: a database reminder two days before each publish date.
• Follow-ups: after a proposal goes out, a reminder to check back in three days.
