Notion AI is no longer a ten dollar add-on. It is bundled into Notion's Business and Enterprise plans, and the moment you run an agent it starts spending metered credits on top of the seat you already pay for.
ChatGPT works the other way. You pay one flat price for a seat and the limits are published on the pricing page.
That difference in shape, not in capability, is what decides which one you need.
Quick answer
Use Notion AI when the work is inside your workspace: answering from your own pages, writing meeting notes into a database, running an agent against your team's knowledge. Use ChatGPT when the work is open-ended thinking, drafting from nothing, research, or code. Most teams that pay for one end up paying for both, and that is a reasonable outcome rather than a failure to choose.
What Notion AI actually is now
Notion advertises seven AI surfaces: Notion Agent, Custom Agents, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search, Research Mode, AI Blocks and Database Autofill.
The pace of change in 2026 has been unusual even by Notion's standards.
- February: Custom Agents reached general availability.
- 1 July: External Agents arrived, letting you orchestrate Claude and Cursor from inside Notion and mention them like teammates.
- 15 September: Notion 3.7 landed with Skills, reusable instructions that teach the AI how your team works. Those Skills download as a
SKILL.mdfile to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini and Grok.
It is not a GPT wrapper, and the model picker proves it
This is the single most repeated wrong thing about Notion AI, so it is worth stating plainly.
Notion is multi-vendor and model-agnostic. The picker has carried models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Zhipu and Moonshot across 2026, and as of the September release it offers Opus 5, GPT-5.6 Sol and Kimi K3 among others.
Notion's own product page promises you can switch a workflow to a different model or provider without losing context.
Since 10 September, owners and admins choose which models their agents may use, and premium models are off by default for the Notion Agent.
What Notion AI costs, and why it is not one number
Here is the part that catches teams out.
- The seat. Notion AI is included with Business and Enterprise. Business is $20 per member per month billed annually. Free and Plus workspaces get a limited number of complimentary AI responses and cannot buy their way up without changing plan.
- The allowance. Business and Enterprise include a usage allowance for the Notion Agent, image generation and page translation. It resets on a six-hour window and again over the monthly billing cycle. Notion does not publish the number. You can only see your allowance in Settings, under Notion AI, under Usage.
- The credits. Everything past the allowance runs on Notion credits: $10 per 1,000 credits monthly, or $13 per 1,000 on an annual plan. They do not carry over. Only Business and Enterprise can buy them.
Credits are what Custom Agents, Workers and premium models spend. Custom Agents were free through 3 May 2026 and have billed since 4 May. Workers are free to try during the beta. Notion says they will eventually draw on credits at about $0.0023 per run, roughly 4,348 runs per 1,000 credits, and has not published a start date.
The one number Notion does publish
Notion charges provider token rates with no markup, so a premium model costs you what the model provider charges. The variable you cannot see in advance is how much of your allowance a given agent run consumes, because the allowance itself is unpublished.

Two details worth knowing before you compare. Scheduled tasks are not on the Free plan. And workspace agents and company knowledge are switched off on every individual plan, including Pro, so the agentic features people assume they are buying at $100 a month are actually a Business feature.
The context windows differ more than the prices do: 27K on Free, 54K on Go and Plus, 128K on Pro for instant responses, and 256K rising to 400K for reasoning.

The honest summary: Notion AI is priced like infrastructure and ChatGPT is priced like a seat. If your use is bursty and unpredictable, that difference matters more than any feature on the list.
Can you use both together?
Yes, and the plumbing is better than it was, with one closed door.
ChatGPT has a Notion app that reads and searches Notion pages the connected account can see. The catch is that it no longer supports sync for new connections, though existing ones keep working.
For read and write both ways, the route is now Notion's MCP server, which also serves Claude and Cursor.
Going the other direction, Notion AI Connectors pull context from Slack, Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, Jira, GitHub, Linear, Gmail, Outlook and Google Calendar, and answer with citations back to the source. Third-party connectors need Business or Enterprise.
What neither of them does
Read the connector list again and notice what it is for. Notion AI reads your Gmail, your Outlook and your Google Calendar so it can answer questions and cite them. Notion's documentation does not say connectors write into your databases.
So in both stacks, your meetings, tasks, mail and contacts stay outside Notion as searchable context. They do not become rows you can filter, roll up, relate to a project, or edit from either side.

- You live in Notion and your team's knowledge is there. Notion AI, on Business. Watch the credit meter for the first month before you judge the cost.
- You want a thinking tool and a drafting partner. ChatGPT Plus at $20. Nothing in Notion AI replaces it for open-ended work.
- You are on Notion Free or Plus. ChatGPT, for now. Notion AI's useful surfaces are behind the Business plan and there is no way to buy into them.
- You need scheduled, unattended work against your own records. Both can do it. Notion charges per run and OpenAI includes scheduled tasks in the seat.
- You need your calendar and tasks to be editable rows in Notion rather than cited context. Neither. That is a sync problem, not an AI problem.
One timing note: Notion Mail shut down on 22 September 2026, so Notion Mail AI is no longer one of the things you get when you pay for Notion.
Conclusion
The useful question in 2026 is not which AI is smarter. Both are built on frontier models, and Notion lets you pick whose.
The question is what you are buying. ChatGPT sells you a seat with published limits. Notion sells you a seat with an unpublished allowance and a meter behind it, in exchange for an AI that already knows your workspace and can write into it.
