Glossary of 2sync terms

Definitions for every key term used in 2sync

2sync uses specific terminology throughout its dashboard, documentation, and settings. This glossary defines every key term so you can configure your automations with confidence. Bookmark this page for quick reference.

What do 2sync terms mean?

Below is a complete reference of terms you will encounter when using 2sync.

TermDefinition
AutomationA configured sync connection between a Notion database and an external app. Each automation defines what syncs, how it maps, and in which direction.
ConnectionAn authenticated link to an external service (Google, Microsoft, Todoist). Created once and reused across automations.
Shared ConnectionAn OAuth connection shared via link so team members can use your connection to sync to a shared Notion database.
Field MappingThe configuration that pairs Notion properties with external app fields. Each mapping defines which data transfers and in which direction.
Relation PropertyA Notion property type that links rows across databases. Used by 2sync to connect attendees to contacts or tasks to projects.
Sync FrequencyHow often 2sync checks for changes. Ranges from 2 minutes (Pro) to 5 minutes (Solo) depending on your plan.
Time WindowThe date range 2sync monitors for items. Events or tasks outside this window are not synced. Ranges from 6 months (Solo) to 2 years (Pro).
Two-Way SyncChanges flow in both directions. Edit in Notion and the external app updates. Edit in the external app and Notion updates.
One-Way SyncChanges flow in a single direction only. Either from the external app to Notion, or from Notion to the external app.
Filter / ConditionRules that control which items sync. Combine conditions using "All conditions" (AND) or "Any condition" (OR) logic, or choose "No filtering" to sync everything.
AssetA calendar, task list, project, or contact group selected for syncing within an automation.
Default AssetThe designated asset where new Notion items are created when no specific destination is set. Shown with a green chip on the dashboard.
RefreshA manual action that triggers an immediate sync cycle outside the scheduled frequency.
Dry RunA preview mode that shows what a sync would do without making any actual changes. Useful for testing new configurations.
UnsyncDisconnecting an item from its sync partner without deleting it. The item remains in both apps but stops receiving updates.
Bypass HaltA setting that overrides safety limits. When enabled, 2sync proceeds with large deletions or bulk changes that would normally trigger a halt.
Static ValuesFixed default values assigned to fields when no source data exists. For example, setting a default calendar color for all new events.
Recurring EventA calendar event that repeats on a schedule. 2sync tracks recurrence metadata and handles each occurrence.
Event ExceptionA single instance of a recurring event that has been modified independently from the series.
Rate LimitingTemporary throttling imposed by external APIs (Notion, Google, Microsoft) when too many requests are made in a short period. 2sync handles this automatically with retries.
Sync NowA manual trigger that starts an immediate sync cycle outside the scheduled frequency. Use it after bulk changes or to verify a configuration update.
Activity LogA record of all sync operations, changes, and errors for an automation. Use it to review what happened during each sync cycle.
Sync WindowAnother name for Time Window. The date range 2sync monitors for items to sync.
Safety Halt / Auto-StopAn automatic pause triggered when 2sync detects unusual deletion patterns, such as mass deletions or rapid delete rates. Protects against accidental data loss.
Field Mapping DirectionA per-field setting that controls which direction data flows for a specific field. Can be set to two-way, one-way to Notion, or one-way to the external app independently of the automation-level direction.

How do I use this glossary?

If you encounter an unfamiliar term in the 2sync dashboard or documentation, search this page. Each term links to the concept as it applies specifically to 2sync, not to general software terminology.

Terms like "asset" and "connection" have specific meanings in 2sync that differ from general usage. Always refer to this glossary for the 2sync-specific definition.

FAQ

What is the difference between a Connection and an Automation?

A Connection is your authenticated link to a service like Google or Outlook. An Automation is a specific sync setup that uses that connection to sync data between a Notion database and the connected service. One connection can power multiple automations.

What is the difference between Unsync and Delete?

Unsync breaks the link between two items but keeps both copies. Delete removes the item from one or both platforms depending on your deletion settings. Unsync is the default, safer behavior.

What does Bypass Halt do?

Bypass Halt overrides the safety mechanism that pauses syncing when large-scale changes are detected. Use it only when you intentionally want to proceed with bulk deletions or modifications.

How is a Shared Connection different from a regular Connection?

A regular Connection links your personal account. A Shared Connection lets you share your OAuth connection via a link so team members can use it to sync to the same Notion database. Team members paste the shared link to use your connection.
